PRIMITIVE 18TH CENTURY ORKNEY CHAIR
A rare surviving, late 18th century Orkney chair, primitively constructed from a mix of beautifully patinated pine and fruitwood timber. Featuring an unusual and original panelled back - not a later, less-skilled replacement for a damaged straw back, typically seen.
The naivety of the craftsmanship would suggest that the piece was likely estate made by, or for, an individual crofter rather than the product of a workshop.
Boasting numerous characterful, historic repairs, this vernacular piece originates from the Orkney archipelago, off the northwestern coast of Scotland. A craft dating back hundreds of years and varying from maker-to-maker - the chair was designed low to the ground to avoid smoke from the open fires, with the winged back providing warmth and shelter from the wild island weather.
