19th Century Rat de Cave

An early 19th century forged iron folk candle holder, known as a ‘Rat de Cave’ (translating as ‘cellar rat’). Traditionally used for bringing a light source down to a wine cellar - the ‘rat’s tail’ both secured the candle, and allowed it to be carried, while the almond shaped tray collected the wax. French, c. 1820.
